Sant Kavi Mahipati Maharaj (1715–1790 CE) dedicated his earthly existence to immortalizing the lives, trials, and triumphs of countless saints through his sublime biographies and poetic compositions. Though the ravages of time, insects, and natural decay claimed a portion of his writings over the centuries, the surviving corpus preserves the detailed hagiographies of over two hundred and eighty-four saints. In his era—and perhaps across the entire expanse of human history—no other single individual produced a comparable wealth of saintly literature.
Through his masterworks, Mahipati rescued the forgotten legacies of ancient and medieval saints from oblivion, etching them into eternity. To this day, the Warkari tradition regards Mahipati’s writings as the definitive, authoritative source for the lives of the saints. His monumental works have also inspired a host of Western scholars and researchers—including Justin E. Abbott (1853–1932), Charles Augustus Kincaid (1870–1954), John Kanu, James Lochfeld, and Christine Lee Novetzky (born 1979)—who studied his literature to craft modern works of historical and spiritual scholarship.
Yet, tragically, even today, many Maharashtrian households remain unfamiliar with the towering figure of Sant Mahipati, despite the colossal ocean of literature he gifted to the world.
In 2011, Ghanshyam Patil of Chaprak Prakashan reached out to a distinguished circle of saint-literature scholars, Ph.D. laureates, and historians, dedicating a special commemorative edition of the Chaprak magazine to introduce Sant Mahipati Maharaj to the Maharashtra government, public libraries, and Marathi readers everywhere. The Sacred Shrine and Pilgrimage of Tahharabad
The hallowed samadhi shrine of Sant Mahipati Maharaj rests in the village of Varjuwadi, known today as Tahharabad (in the Rahuri taluka). In 1986, the local community united to establish a formal trust, giving rise to a magnificent temple complex.
Mahipati’s ancestral home and the temple he raised with the loving labor of the villagers are affectionately revered as the Deulwada. Within these sacred walls, the Maharaj’s holy padukas (footwear/print) and a wealth of his surviving manuscripts are piously preserved, open to the reverent gaze of pilgrims to this day.
Every year, on the auspicious day of Jyeshtha Shuddha Dwadashi, the grand palkhi (palanquin) procession of the Wari departs from Tahharabad, drawing thousands of devoted souls into its fold. In Pandharpur itself, the trust maintains a dedicated matha where Warkaris find shelter during the holy pilgrimage.
When the Wari returns to its home soil, a grand festival known as Gopalkala erupts from Ashadh Vadya Ekadashi to Chaturdashi. It is an unshakeable article of faith among the devotees that during this sacred season, the divine deities Viththal and Rukmini of Pandhari travel personally to Tahharabad to reside among them.
From all corners of the district, dindis converge upon Tahharabad. The air trembles with the cadence of spiritual tales, rapturous kirtans, and profound discourses. The atmosphere mirrors the divine electricity of the Ashadhi Ekadashi festival in Pandharpur itself—earning Tahharabad its rightful title as "Prati-Pandharpur" (The Counterpart of Pandharpur).
