Chapter 10 : The Chronicle of Saints: The Divine Legacy of Mahipati Maharaj

To chronicle the lives of saints or to capture the essence of their spiritual journeys is no ordinary task. Words acquire true power only through rigorous spiritual discipline and the grace of the Divine. Such portrayal relies entirely upon the chronicler’s personal experience and innate poetic genius. Here, however, was Mahipati Maharaj—a loving disciple touched by the blessing of Jagatguru Tukobaraya himself—stepping forth to render the lives of the saints into verse. Naturally, that sacred writing blossomed into a holy river of saintly biographies, offering profound inner fulfillment to all who approached it.
The Call to Creation
The moment the inspiration of Saint Tukaram and the boundless power of divine devotion took hold of Mahipati’s soul, a fierce, luminous enthusiasm surged through his being. He shouldered the monumental task of rendering the lives of all great saints into the Marathi tongue. Drawing inspiration from North Indian hagiographies like the Bhaktamal composed by Saint Nabhadas, Mahipati Maharaj translated and elevated numerous saintly narratives into exquisite, vernacular ovisan.
The biographical accounts of saints serve as living testaments to supreme renunciation, absolute surrender, inner peace, pure devotion, and boundless love. Listening to these sacred tales naturally draws the mind into an ocean of bhakti, absorbing it entirely in the lofty philosophy of the saints.
While composing these biographies, Mahipati would become so utterly absorbed that he would lose all memory of hunger and thirst. To gather authentic accounts of various saints, he traveled extensively from village to village, never missing his annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur. There, amidst the vast sea of devotees arriving from every corner of the land, he would converse with pilgrims, gather regional lore about local saints, listen intently to their ancestral stories, and weave them into verse using his sweet, immaculate, and embellished words.
The Divine Command
Armed with the formidable example of Saint Tukaram's trials and triumphs in his mission of spiritual awakening and societal upliftment, Mahipati's pen acquired a rare, transcendent strength. As he began traveling from village to village to share the narratives he had composed, a profound and transformative wave of saintly literature swept across the consciousness of society.
Reflecting upon his sacred mission of literary devotion, Mahipati Maharaj himself recorded an extraordinary vision in his monumental work, Bhakta Lilamrita:
Swapni yeuni jagjethi | Aapulya haati chopati || Mhane mahipati vege uthi | Davandi piti nijsukhe ||
"In the quiet hours of sleep, the Lord of the Universe appeared in my dream, gently tapping me with His staff, and commanded: 'Mahipati, arise swiftly! Proclaim the glories of the saints and spread their sacred lives with joyous abandon!'"
Just as the Supreme Lord seemed possessed by an irresistible longing to hear the stories of His saints through Mahipati's lips, so too was Mahipati consumed by a relentless passion to chronicle their lives. He refused to let a single moment of his existence pass idly without narrating the lives of the holy. Quoting this spirit, the great poet Moropant beautifully observed:
Shrihari bhaktirasachi shrihari bhakti | Ras satsudha bharite || Charite gata jene aayushya | Kshan pado dile na rite ||
Every time a biographical volume was completed, the Maharaj would journey to Pandharpur and read it aloud at the feet of Lord Vitthal. Such was the sublime depth, elegance, and spiritual resonance of his pen that even Lord Vitthal Himself might well feel tempted to wander down to Mahipati's home just to listen to the glowing tributes composed by one of His most devoted servants.
An Invaluable Treasure for Humanity
The lost essence of our true inner self is rediscovered when we immerse ourselves in the biographies of the saints. Therefore, all seekers are called to read and reverently listen to these hagiographies. Through the sovereign grace of his pen, Mahipati Maharaj immortalized the life stories of over two hundred and eighty-four saints, gifting humanity an invaluable and eternal treasure.
