महाराष्ट्रकन्या - महिला दिन विशेष (संपादकीय)

“दादा अचानक गेले आणि जबाबदारीचं मोठं ओझं ठेवून गेले. हे सगळं शिवधनुष्य उचलत असताना सगळ्यांच्या अपेक्षांचं ओझं आणि असणारी जबाबदारीची जाणीव याची कल्पना आहे. यापुढे महाराष्ट्राचं कल्याण, जनतेचं भलं आणि राष्ट्रवादीचा विचार हेच आता माझं ध्येय असणार आहे. केवळ पार्थ आणि जय हेच माझं कुटुंब नाही, तर संपूर्ण राष्ट्रवादी काँग्रेस पक्ष हा माझा परिवार आहे,” असे धीरोदात्त उद्गार राष्ट्रवादी काँग्रेस अजितदादा पवार पक्षाच्या नव्या राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्षा सुनेत्राताई पवार यांनी काढले आणि सगळेच अवाक झाले.

पतीच्या अपघाती निधनानंतर चौथ्या दिवशी उपमुख्यमंत्रीपदाची शपथ घेणाऱ्या सुनेत्राताईंच्या खंबीरतेचे दर्शन त्याचवेळी घडले होते. पतीवियोगात हतबल होऊन सगळ्या जबाबदाऱ्यांपासून दूर पळायला त्या लेच्यापेच्या नेत्या नाहीत. लहानपणापासूनच त्यांना राजकारणाचं बाळकडू लाभलंय. मराठवाड्यातील धाराशिवच्या तेर या गावचे ‌‘डॅशिंग‌’ नेते डॉ. पद्मसिंह पाटील यांच्या त्या भगिनी आहेत. एकेकाळी शरद पवारांच्या सोबत सावलीप्रमाणे असलेल्या पद्मसिंहांची धावपळ त्यांनी बघितली आहे. लग्नानंतर पवारांसारख्या बलाढ्य राजकीय घराण्याची सून म्हणून आल्यानंतर त्यांनी पडद्याआड राहत अनेक भूमिका पार पाडल्या आहेत. अजितदादा पवार यांच्यासारख्या झंजावाताची सावली बनून राहतानाच त्यांनी काटेवाडी गावच्या विकासात मोलाचे योगदान दिले. पर्यावरणविषयक अनेक कामे आस्थेने पूर्ण केली.  

अजितदादांचं अपघाती निधन हा संपूर्ण महाराष्ट्राला धक्का होता. त्या दुःखातून महाराष्ट्र अजूनही सावरला नाही. त्यांच्याशी कसलाच परिचय नसणाऱ्यांच्या डोळ्यातही अश्रुंचे बांध फुटले. मोठ्या झाडाखाली छोटा वृक्ष वाढत नाही, हा निसर्गनियम असतो; मात्र शरद पवार यांच्यासारख्या उचापती नेत्यांसोबत काम करूनही त्यांनी स्वतःला वेळोवेळी सिद्ध केलं. शरद पवार यांनी फक्त इशारा केला तरी त्यांचा आदर राखत त्यांनी त्यांच्या मनाप्रमाणे निर्णय घेतले. ‌‘आपला काका लई मोठा हाय‌’ हे सांगताना त्यांना कायम अभिमानच वाटायचा. दुसरीकडे शरद पवार यांनी मात्र आपल्या या कर्तबगार पुतण्याला कधीच कोणत्या महत्त्वाच्या संधी दिल्या नाहीत. राष्ट्रवादी काँग्रेस पक्षाचे जास्त आमदार आलेले असताना आणि दादांना मुख्यमंत्री पदाची संधी असतानाही त्यांनी दादांना सर्वेाच्च सत्तेपासून दूर ठेवले आणि इतर चार खाती मागून घेतली.

‌‘मी राजकारणातला टग्या आहे‌’ किंवा ‌‘धरणात पाणीच नाही तर आता काय त्यात मुतू का?‌’ अशी काही चुकीची वाक्ये दादांच्या तोंडून गेली. त्यावेळी त्यांना समजून घेत लोकांचे गैरसमज दूर करण्याऐवजी दादांविषयी जनमत कसे कलुषित होईल हेच बघितले गेले. दादांनाही त्याची जाणीव झाली आणि लगबगीने त्यांनी कराडला जाऊन यशवंतराव चव्हाण यांच्या समाधीपुढे नतमस्तक होत ‌‘आत्मक्लेष‌’ केला. लोकांना काय वाटायचे ते वाटू द्यात पण आपल्याकडून चूक झालीच तर ती सुधारायची आणि स्वतःत बदल करायचे हा सध्याच्या राजकारणातील दुर्मीळ गुण दादांत होता.

अशा सगळ्या परिस्थितीत त्यांच्या सोबत ठामपणे राहिलेल्या सुनेत्राताईंनी त्यांना धीर दिला होता. ‌‘लोक ट्रोल करतात त्याचे आम्हाला वाईट वाटते, शेवटी आम्हीही माणसेच आहोत ना?‌’ असं त्यावेळी त्या म्हणाल्या होत्या.

दादा अचानकपणे गेल्याने दुःखाचा डोंगर कोसळला होता. शरद पवार यांचे आजवरचे राजकारण पाहता आमदारांची फोडाफोडी होणार, अशी चर्चा होती. दोन्ही पक्ष एकत्र आणायचे असा मनसुबा बोलून दाखवला जात होता. किंबहुना दादांचीच ती कशी इच्छा होती, असे सांगणारे महाभागही पुढे आले. हे सगळे पाहता दादांचे कर्तृत्व पुसले जाऊ नये म्हणून अफाट क्षमतेचे ‌‘जादूई मुख्यमंत्री‌’ देवेंद्रजी फडणवीस यांच्या आवाहनाला प्रतिसाद देत त्यांनी लगोलग उपमुख्यमंत्रीपदाची शपथ घेण्याची तयारी दर्शविली. स्वतःला चाणक्य समजणारे अनेक स्वघोषित धुरंधर त्यामुळे बाजूला पडले आणि एक नवे पर्व सुरू झाले.

सुनेत्राताईंचे नवे पर्व आहे, हेही रोहित पवार यांच्यासारखे नेते मानायला तयार नाहीत. उलट ‌‘काकींच्या खांद्यावर कोणीतरी हात ठेवला आणि ते पाहताना आम्हालाच वाईट वाटले,‌’ असे निर्लज्ज विधान करत त्यांनी त्यांची तोकडी समज दाखवून दिली. आजवर भारताच्या राजकारणात विविध विचारधारांच्या मोजक्या महिला पक्षाध्यक्ष झाल्या. त्या रांगेत सुनेत्रावहिनी जाऊन बसल्या आहेत. ही महाराष्ट्रकन्या या सगळ्यांजणीपेक्षा अफाट कर्तृत्व गाजवेल हे वेगळे सांगायला नको. एका अत्यंत वाईट प्रकारामुळे त्यांना या सगळ्यात सामील व्हावे लागले आहे; मात्र अजितदादांचा विचार पुढे नेण्यासाठी, त्यांचे कार्य चिरंतन ठेवण्यासाठी त्या या सगळे हलाहल निश्चितपणे पचवतील.

महाराणी ताराबाई यांना बाहेरच्या आणि घरच्या दोन्ही आघाड्यांवर जसा संघर्ष करावा लागला तशीच परिस्थिती सध्या सुनेत्राताईंसमोर आहे. त्यासाठी त्यांनी स्वतःला सिद्ध केले आहे. ‌‘अकेला देवेंद्र क्या करेगा?‌’ असं उन्मत्तपणे विचारणाऱ्या सुप्रिया सुळेंना पुढे फडणवीसांनी काय करून दाखवलं ते दिसून आलंच. आता ‌‘ही एकटी बाई काय करणार?‌’ असा सूर काही जण लावत आहेत आणि तसे जनमत तयार करत आहेत.

‌‘ज्याचं जळतं त्यालाच कळतं‌’ हा नियम मान्य केला तर सुनेत्राताईंनी जे गमावलं आहे ते कशानेही भरून येणार नाही. तरीही त्या कणखरपणे उभ्या राहत आहेत, ही महाराष्ट्राची संस्कृती आहे. म्हणूनच त्वेषाने पेटलेली आणि सकारात्मक दृष्टिकोन असलेली ही

‌‘महाराष्ट्रकन्या‌’ चिल्लर-थिल्लरांना न जुमानता आपला वेगळा राजमार्ग तयार करेल. लेखाच्या प्रारंभी दिलेल्या त्यांच्या भाषणातील ओळी याची साक्ष पटवून देतात. अजितदादांच्या निधनाला एक महिना पूर्ण झाला आहे. या दरम्यान सुनेत्राताईंच्या क्षमताचा अंदाज महाराष्ट्राला आलाच आहे. या रणरागिणीस आमच्या मनःपूर्वक शुभेच्छा!

Daughter of Maharashtra

“Dada passed away suddenly, leaving behind a massive burden of responsibility. As I take up this ‘Shiv Dhanushya’ (monumental task), I am fully aware of the weight of everyone's expectations and the gravity of the duty. From this point forward, the welfare of Maharashtra, the wellbeing of the people, and the ideology of the NCP will be my only goals. Parth and Jay are not my only family; the entire Nationalist Congress Party is my family,” declared Sunetratai Pawar, the new National President of the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP. Her courageous words left everyone stunned.

The strength of Sunetratai, who took the oath as Deputy Chief Minister just four days after the accidental death of her husband, was evident even then. She is not a weak leader who would succumb to the grief of losing her spouse and run away from her responsibilities. She has been nurtured in politics since childhood, being the sister of the ‘dashing’ leader from Ter (Dharashiv), Dr. Padmasinh Patil. She witnessed the tireless work of Padmasinh, who was once like a shadow to Sharad Pawar. After marrying into the powerful Pawar political dynasty, she played many roles behind the scenes. While remaining a supportive shadow to a whirlwind personality like Ajit Dada Pawar, she contributed significantly to the development of Katewadi village and meticulously completed several environmental projects.

Ajit Dada’s accidental death was a shock to all of Maharashtra—a grief from which the state hasn't yet recovered. Even those who didn't know him personally were moved to tears. It is a law of nature that a small tree does not grow under a massive one; however, even while working alongside a manipulative leader like Sharad Pawar, Ajit Dada proved himself time and again. He maintained respect for Sharad Pawar, making decisions according to his wishes at just a hint. He always took pride in saying, "My uncle is very great." On the other hand, Sharad Pawar never gave his capable nephew significant opportunities. Even when the NCP had the most MLAs and Dada had the chance to become Chief Minister, he kept Dada away from supreme power, settling for four other ministries instead.

A few controversial statements, like "I am a rogue in politics" or the comment regarding water in dams, were uttered by Dada. At that time, instead of understanding him and clearing public misconceptions, efforts were made to further poison public opinion against him. Dada realized this and promptly went to Karad to bow before the memorial of Yashwantrao Chavan in an act of "penance" (Aatmaklesh). To admit a mistake and improve oneself is a rare quality in today’s politics, and Dada possessed it.

Throughout these situations, Sunetratai stood firmly by him and gave him courage. “It hurts us when people troll; after all, we are humans too, aren't we?” she had said at the time.

Dada's sudden departure brought a mountain of grief. Knowing Sharad Pawar's history of politics, there were rumors of MLAs being split. Talk of merging both factions was being circulated, with some even claiming it was Dada's own wish. To ensure that Dada’s legacy was not erased, Sunetratai responded to the call of the immensely capable and "magical" Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and showed her readiness to take the oath of Deputy Chief Minister. Many self-proclaimed "Chanakyas" were sidelined, and a new era began.

Leaders like Rohit Pawar are unwilling to accept this new era for Sunetratai. On the contrary, he displayed a shallow mindset by making the shameless statement, “Someone put a hand on Kaki's (aunt's) shoulder, and it felt bad to watch that.” In the history of Indian politics, only a few women of various ideologies have become party presidents. Sunetratai has now joined those ranks. It goes without saying that this 'Daughter of Maharashtra' will display even greater prowess than her predecessors. Though a tragic turn of events forced her into this role, she will surely swallow the bitter pill to take Ajit Dada's vision forward and make his work eternal.

Just as Maharani Tarabai had to struggle on both internal and external fronts, a similar situation stands before Sunetratai today. She has prepared herself for it. Supriya Sule, who once arrogantly asked “What will a lonely Devendra do?”, saw exactly what Fadnavis achieved. Now, some are raising a similar tune, asking “What will this lone woman do?” to sway public opinion.

If we accept the rule that “only the one who suffers knows the pain,” then what Sunetratai has lost can never be replaced. Yet, her standing strong is the very culture of Maharashtra. Therefore, this fierce and positive ‘Daughter of Maharashtra’ will ignore the petty critics and carve out her own highway. The lines from her speech at the beginning of this article are proof of that. It has been one month since Ajit Dada's passing, and in this time, Maharashtra has already caught a glimpse of Sunetratai’s capabilities.
