गांभीर्यपूर्वक शपथ घेते की...

मंत्रीपदाची शपथ घेताना स्वतःचे नाव सांगून सर्वसाधारणपणे ‌‘ईश्वरसाक्ष शपथ घेतो की...‌’ अशी सुरूवात केली जाते. ‌‘मी धर्माऐवजी कर्मावर विश्वास ठेवतो,‌’ असे सांगणाऱ्या अजितदादा पवार यांनी मात्र ही प्रथा बदलून ‌‘मी गांभीर्यपूर्वक शपथ घेतो की...‌’ अशी सुरूवात करण्याचा नवीन पायंडा पाडला. त्यांच्या पश्चात सुनेत्राताई पवार यांनीही हा वारसा जपत ‌‘मी सुनेत्रा अजित पवार गांभीर्यपूर्वक शपथ घेते की...‌’ अशी सुरूवात करून आपण अजित पवार यांच्या विचारांच्या कृतिशील वारसदार आहोत हे सिद्ध केले आहे.

संपूर्ण महाराष्ट्र दुःखात असताना अतिशय साधेपणाने झालेला हा शपथविधी सुनेत्राताईंच्या धीरोदात्तपणाची साक्ष देतो. ‌‘या शपथविधीसंदर्भात आपणास काहीच माहीत नाही, तो त्यांच्या पक्षाचा निर्णय आहे, पवार कुटुंबीयातून कोणीही शपथविधीस उपस्थित राहणार नाही,‌’ असे सांगत शरद पवार यांनी पुन्हा एकदा त्यांच्या मनाचा कोतेपणा दाखवला. त्यांच्या कन्येनेही ‌‘मला शपथविधीची काहीच माहिती नाही, उद्या बजेट असल्याने मी दिल्लीला चालले‌’ असे सांगत माध्यमांसमोर हात जोडले. ‌‘काकींचा शपथविधी ही आनंदाची गोष्ट असली तरी या दुःखात त्यांना शुभेच्छा तरी कशा देणार?‌’ असा सवाल रोहित पवार यांनी केला.

एकंदरीत शरद पवार, सुप्रिया सुळे, रोहित पवार यांचे बेगडीपण यातून दिसून आले. नवरा गेल्यानंतर बाईने बांगड्या फोडाव्यात, कुंकू पुसावे, सतत गळा काढावा असे वाटणारा एक मोठा वर्ग आहे. अशा सगळ्या दुःखाच्या प्रसंगात हा शपथविधी पार पाडणे का आणि किती गरजेचे आहे, याचा विचारही ते करू शकणार नाहीत. अजितदादांचा अंत्यविधी सुरू असताना खिदळत बसलेल्या प्रतिभाताई पवार, सतत कॅमेऱ्यासमोर येण्यासाठी धडपडणाऱ्या सुप्रिया सुळे, नीरा कालव्यासंदर्भात शेतकऱ्यांच्या भेटी घेऊन आपण कसे धाडसी आणि कार्यतत्त्पर आहोत हे दाखवणारे थोरले साहेब हे सगळे अशा लोकांना चालते; मात्र सुनेत्राताईंचा शपथविधी त्यांना खटकतो.

डॉ. पद्मसिंह पाटील यांची बहीण असलेल्या या तेरच्या कन्येने बालपणापासूनच घरात राजकारण बघितले आहे. लग्नानंतरही त्या अजितदादा पवार यांच्यासारख्या वादळाच्या सावली बनून राहिल्या. पर्यावरणासारख्या विषयात प्रसिद्धीपासून दूर राहत मोठे काम उभे केले. दादांच्या महाराष्ट्रभरातील कार्यकर्त्यांसोबत मायेचे नाते निर्माण केले. त्या शांत आहेत, संयमी आहेत याचा अर्थ त्यांच्या कार्यक्षमतेवर अविश्वास दाखवता येणार नाही. अशा दुःखद प्रसंगी महाराष्ट्राच्या पहिल्या महिला उपमुख्यमंत्री म्हणून त्यांच्या खांद्यावर जबाबदारी आली आहे. त्यांचे मूल्यमापण करायला थोडा वेळ तरी द्यावाच लागेल. तसे न करता अनेक जण प्रतिक्रियावादीच होत आहेत.

अजितदादांच्या अपघातानंतर बारामतीत येऊन त्याची बारीकसारीक माहिती घेणारे, त्यानंतर ‌‘हा निव्वळ अपघात आहे, त्याचे वेगळे अर्थ काढू नका‌’ अशा आशयाचे विचार भयव्याकूळ आणि प्रचंड व्यथित होऊन काढणारे शरदराव पवार बघितल्यावर प्रत्येकाच्या काळजाला चरे पडत होते. मुळात अजितदादा आणि त्यांच्या सोबत्यांचा अशा पद्धतीने अंत व्हावा, हेच दुःख सहनशक्तीच्या पलीकडचे होते मात्र पवारांचे त्यांच्या पुतण्यावरील हे प्रेम 24 तासही टिकले नाही, हे महाराष्ट्राने बघितले.

अजितदादांच्या निधनानंतर बारामतीत आलेल्या मुख्यमंत्री देवेंद्र फडणवीस आणि उपमुख्यमंत्री एकनाथ शिंदे यांची देहबोलीही खूप काही सांगून जात होती. पुरुषाला कितीही उमाळे दाटून आले तरी रडता येत नाही, हेच त्यातून दिसून आले. आपला फक्त सहकारीच नाही तर एक स्पष्टवक्ता मित्र गमावल्याचे त्यांचे शल्य दिसून येत होते. दादांना श्रद्धांजली अर्पण करणाऱ्या भाजपच्या पान-पानभर जाहिराती वृत्तपत्रातून झळकल्या आणि अनेकांचा पोटशूळ वाढला. देवेंद्र फडणवीस, केंद्रीय गृहमंत्री अमित शहा, भाजपचे राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष नितीन नबीन अशा अनेक नेत्यांनी बारामतीत येऊन सुनेत्राताईंचे सांत्वन केले. ‌‘आम्ही सगळे तुमच्या बरोबर आहोत,‌’ असा दिलासाही त्यांनी त्यांच्या वर्तनातून दिला. भाजपला अजितदादांच्या पक्षाची नितांत गरज आहे, असेच त्यांचे वर्तन होते.

त्यानंतर दुसऱ्याच दिवशी ‌‘आपण खूप दुःखात आहोत,‌’ असे आव आणणारे शरद पवार गटाचे नेते ‌‘दोन्ही राष्ट्रवादी एकत्र येणार होत्या‌’ असे सांगू लागले. ‌‘त्या संदर्भात अजित पवार यांच्या बैठकाही झाल्या होत्या‌’ असे म्हणत एक व्हिडिओ व्हायरल करण्यात आला. दोन्ही राष्ट्रवादी एकत्र येणे म्हणजे फडणवीसांच्या सत्तेपासून दूर जाणे असे नाही तर त्या सत्तेत सहभागी होऊन भागिदारी मिळवणे, असे अपेक्षित असावे.  ‌‘भारतीय अविश्वासाचे जनक‌’ अशी ओळख असलेले बडे नेते अजितदादा पवारांच्या आमदारांचे काय करणार हे सांगणे कठीण होते. अशा प्रसंगी स्वतःचा दुःखावेग बाजूला सारत कर्तव्यभावनेने पुढे येत सुनेत्राताई पवार यांनी जे धाडस दाखवले ती खरी दादांसारख्या खमक्या नेत्याला श्रद्धांजली ठरली. मुगलमर्दिनी महाराणी ताराबाई यांचा वारसा सांगताना, त्यांच्या आदर्शांचा जयघोष करताना मराठमोळ्या सुनेत्रा अजित पवार म्हणून या सगळ्यात श्रेष्ठ ठरतात.

आपल्याकडे माणसापेक्षा माणसाच्या राखेचा इतिहास पूजण्याचा रिवाज तसा नवा नाही. त्यामुळेच काही दिवसांपूर्वी अजितदादांना एकेरी बोलत आव्हान देणाऱ्या आमदार महेश लांडगे यांना उपरती होण्याचे कौतुक नाही. दादांच्या श्रद्धांजली सभेत केवळ 29 सेकंद कसेबसे बोलणारे आणि ‌‘दादा मला माफ करा‌’ म्हणत दादांच्या प्रतिमेसमोर नतमस्तक होणारे लांडगे महाराष्ट्राने बघितले. ते इतके बदलले की त्यांनी पिंपरीत दादांचा भव्य पुतळा साकारून ‌‘अजितसृष्टी‌’ निर्माण करण्याची मागणी केली. मुळात पिंपरी चिंचवड शहर हेच ‌‘अजितदादांचे स्मारक‌’ आहे, हे अनेकांनी त्यांना तिथल्या तिथे सुनावले. जे अजितदादांशी सबंधित नाहीत, अशाही लाखो जणांना या दुर्घटनेनंतर अश्रू रोखणे शक्य झाले नाही.

काहीही असो, या निमित्ताने एक नवे पर्व सुरू झाले आहे. देवेंद्रजी, एकनाथजी यांनी या लाडक्या बहिणीचा सन्मान राखणे, त्यांना समजून घेत संधी देणे, राज्यशकट हाकताना समानता राखणे हे त्यांचे कर्तव्य आहे. यात ते कसलीही कसूर करणार नाहीत, असे वाटते. अजितदादा यांच्या पद्धतीने सुनेत्राताईंनी शपथ घेताना ‌‘गांभीर्यपूर्वक‌’ हा शब्द जाणीवपूर्वक वापरला आहे. हे ‌‘गांभीर्य‌’ सर्वांनीच समजून घ्यावे, इतकीच माफक अपेक्षा!

"I Solemnly Affirm..."

Traditionally, when taking the oath of office for a ministerial position, one states their name and begins with, "I swear in the name of God that..." However, Ajit Dada Pawar, a man who famously declared, "I believe in work (Karma) rather than religion," broke this custom. He established a new precedent by beginning his oath with, "I solemnly affirm that..."

Following his passing, Sunetra-tai Pawar has upheld this legacy. By beginning her oath with, "I, Sunetra Ajit Pawar, solemnly affirm that..." she has proven herself to be the active heir to Ajit Pawar’s ideology.

Held amidst the profound grief of the entire state of Maharashtra, the utter simplicity of this swearing-in ceremony stands as a testament to Sunetra-tai’s fortitude. Yet, Sharad Pawar displayed his pettiness once again, stating, "We know nothing about this swearing-in; it is their party's decision. No one from the Pawar family will attend." His daughter, Supriya Sule, echoed this, folding her hands before the media and claiming, "I have no information about the oath-taking; I am leaving for Delhi as the budget is tomorrow." Rohit Pawar further questioned, "While Kaki’s (Aunt's) swearing-in is a matter of joy, how can we even offer congratulations in such sorrow?"

In sum, the hypocrisy of Sharad Pawar, Supriya Sule, and Rohit Pawar has been laid bare. There exists a large section of society that believes a woman, after losing her husband, should break her bangles, wipe off her kumkum, and remain in perpetual mourning. People with such a mindset cannot comprehend why carrying out this constitutional duty was necessary—and vital—even in such a tragic moment.

To these critics, it is acceptable for Pratibha-tai Pawar to be seen laughing while Ajit Dada’s final rites were underway; it is acceptable for Supriya Sule to constantly struggle for camera time; it is acceptable for the 'Senior Saheb' (Sharad Pawar) to visit farmers regarding the Nira Canal issue just to project an image of courage and activity. Yet, Sunetra-tai’s swearing-in ceremony bothers them.

Daughter of Ter and sister to Dr. Padmasinh Patil, Sunetra-tai has witnessed politics at home since childhood. Even after marriage, she remained the silent shadow behind the whirlwind that was Ajit Dada Pawar. She built significant work in fields like the environment while staying far away from the limelight. She cultivated a maternal bond with Dada’s workers across Maharashtra. Just because she is quiet and restrained does not mean one can distrust her capability. In this tragic moment, the responsibility of being Maharashtra's first female Deputy Chief Minister has fallen upon her shoulders. She must be given time to be evaluated. Instead, many are simply reacting out of bias.

After Ajit Dada’s accident, Sharad Pawar visited Baramati to take stock of the minutiae. Seeing him speak, seemingly overcome with fear and immense pain, saying, "This is purely an accident, do not draw other meanings from it," tore at everyone's heart. The very idea that Ajit Dada and his associates would meet their end in such a way was sorrow beyond endurance. However, Maharashtra witnessed that Pawar's love for his nephew did not last even 24 hours.

In contrast, the body language of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who arrived in Baramati after Ajit Dada’s demise, spoke volumes. It showed that no matter how overwhelmed a man feels, he cannot easily weep. Their pain was evident—they had lost not just a colleague, but a blunt and honest friend. Full-page tribute advertisements from the BJP filled the newspapers, causing heartburn for many critics. Leaders like Devendra Fadnavis, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP National General Secretary Nitin Nabin visited Baramati to console Sunetra-tai. Their behavior conveyed a clear reassurance: "We are all with you." It demonstrated that the BJP has a dire need for Ajit Dada’s party and respects his legacy.

Yet, the very next day, leaders from the Sharad Pawar faction—who were pretending to be in deep grief—began claiming, "Both NCP factions were going to merge." A video was circulated claiming, "Ajit Pawar even held meetings regarding this." It seems that for them, the two NCPs coming together didn't mean moving away from Fadnavis's power, but rather joining that power structure to claim a share of the partnership.

It is difficult to say what the MLAs of Ajit Dada—a massive leader whose uncle is known as the "Father of Indian Distrust"—would have done. In such a situation, Sunetra-tai Pawar pushed aside her personal grief and stepped forward out of a sense of duty. The courage she showed is the truest tribute to a strong leader like Dada. Invoking the legacy of the Mughal-slayer Maharani Tarabai and hailing her ideals, Sunetra Ajit Pawar stands as the superior figure in this entire narrative.

We have a long-standing tradition of worshipping the history of a man's ashes rather than the man himself. Therefore, there is no praise for MLA Mahesh Landge, who recently had a change of heart after previously challenging Ajit Dada in the singular. Maharashtra watched Landge, who could barely speak for 29 seconds at Dada’s tribute meeting, bow before Dada’s image saying, "Dada, forgive me." He changed so much that he demanded the creation of an "Ajit-Srishti" (Ajit World) by erecting a grand statue of Dada in Pimpri. Many rebuked him then and there, reminding him that the city of Pimpri-Chinchwad itself is Ajit Dada’s memorial. Even millions who were not directly related to Ajit Dada could not hold back their tears after this tragedy.

Be that as it may, a new era has begun. It is the duty of Devendra-ji and Eknath-ji to respect this "Beloved Sister" (Ladki Bahin), to understand her, give her opportunities, and maintain equality while steering the ship of the state. I believe they will not falter in this.

When taking the oath in Ajit Dada's style, Sunetra-tai deliberately used the word "Solemnly" (Gaambhirya-purvak). The only modest expectation is that everyone understands the "Gravity" (Gaambhirya) behind that word.
