ही गोष्ट आहे १९६५ ची ! भारत-पाकिस्तान युद्धामुळे मोठी अन्नटंचाई निर्माण झाली होती. त्यावेळी लालबहादूर शास्त्री यांच्यासारखे चारित्र्यसंपन्न पंतप्रधान देशाचं नेतृत्व करत होते. त्यांच्या राष्ट्रप्रेमी आणि त्यागी भूमिकेमुळे लोक त्यांच्यावर उदंड प्रेम करत. देशहिताचे अनेक महत्त्वपूर्ण निर्णय त्यांनी घेतले होते. अन्नटंचाईला सामोरे जाण्यासाठी त्यांनी देशवासीयांना आवाहन केलं की, 'आठवड्यात एक दिवस एका वेळचं जेवण सोडून द्या!' त्यासाठी त्यांनी स्वतः सोमवार निवडला आणि सोमवारी रात्रीचं जेवण वर्ज्य मानलं. त्यांच्या या निर्णयाला देशवासीयांनी उदंड प्रतिसाद दिला आणि असंख्य लोकांनी सोमवारचं जेवण बंद केलं. याचा इतका मोठा परिणाम झाला की, 'सोमवार शास्त्रीजींचा वार' म्हणून ओळखला जाऊ लागला.

हे आठवण्याचं कारण म्हणजे सध्याचे पंतप्रधान नरेंद्र मोदी यांनी केलेले आवाहन ! युद्धाच्या परिणामुळे तब्बल ७३ दिवसांनी त्यांनी आवाहन केलं की, 'परदेश प्रवास करू नका, सोनं खरेदी करू नका, खाद्यतेलाचा वापर कमी करा, घरातून काम म्हणजे वर्क फ्रॉम होम करा, इलेक्ट्रिक गाड्यांचा वापर वाढवून इंधन वाचवा...' हे सगळं सांगायला त्यांना इतके दिवस का गेले याचं उत्तर कोणताही सामान्य माणूस देऊ शकेल. देशातील काही राज्याच्या निवडणुका त्यांच्या डोळ्यासमोर होत्या. 'दीदी... ओ दीदी... खेला होबे...' असं मागच्या वेळी डिवचूनही यश न आल्यानं यंदा पश्चिम बंगालची रणनीती बदलायची होती. आसाम सांभाळायचा होता. हे सगळं झाल्यावर त्यांना देशभक्तीची आठवण येणं स्वाभाविक होतं. मग इंधनवाढ केली गेली. गॅस सिलेंडरचे दर वाढवले. देशभक्तीच्या नावावर सामान्य माणसाचा कणा मोडता येईल, यासाठी जे काही आवश्यक आहे ते करण्यात पंतप्रधानांनी मुळीच कच खाल्ली नाही.

त्यांच्या या आवाहनानंतर काय झालं? देशासमोर जी आर्थिक अणीबाणी येणार आहे त्याची जाणीव सामान्यांना झाली. सराफ मंडळी पंतप्रधानांच्या आणि त्यांच्या पक्षाच्या विरूद्ध गेली. ज्या मायबाप सरकारनं सोन्याच्या आयातीचा कर कमी केला होता त्याच सरकारनं राष्ट्रभक्तीचा आव आणत आवाहन केलं की, 'सोन्याची खरेदी करू नका. सरकारला विरोध म्हणून कुणी किलानं सोन्याची खरेदी निश्चितच करणार नाही पण यातून असंतोष निर्माण झाला.

जीएसटी, नोटबंदी यातून अजूनही अनेकांना सावरता येत नाहीये. कोविडच्या काळात लस घेणे बंधनकारक करण्यात आले होते. लसीचा डोस घेतला नाही तर बस स्थानक, रेल्वस्थानक, विमानतळ असा कुठेही प्रवेश नव्हता. आता मात्र या लसीचे दुष्परिणाम दिसू लागल्यावर सरकार म्हणतेय आम्ही लोकांच्या सुदृढ आरोग्यासाठी तसे आवाहन केले होते मात्र ते बंधनकारक नव्हते! जीएसटी काय किंवा नोटबंदी काय त्यांच्या या निष्क्रियतेवर पांघरूण घालण्यासाठी आणि त्याचे निर्लज्ज समर्थन करण्यासाठी काही चित्रपट येत आहेत. आपण जे काही केले ते सगळे राष्ट्रहिताचे होते आणि त्याला जे विरोध करतील ते सर्व राष्ट्रद्रोही असे चित्र निर्माण केले जात आहे.

काँग्रेसच्या अराजकाला कंटाळलेल्या जनतेला बदल हवा होता. त्यासाठी मोठ्या प्रमाणात परिवर्तन घडले. आता मात्र आगीतून उठून फुफाट्यात अशीच सामान्य माणसाची गत झालीय. काँग्रेसच्या कारकिर्दीत पिचले गेलेल्या अनेकांना हा देशाचा दुसरा स्वातंत्र्यलढा वाटला. अनेकांना मोदी म्हणजे परमेश्वरी अवतार वाटले. काहींनी त्यांच्यात विश्वगुरू पाहिला. काहींना त्यात भगवान विष्णूचेही दर्शन घडले. मोदींचे भक्त म्हणवून घेण्यात धन्यता वाटावी असा एक मोठा वर्ग तयार झाला. आजची देशाची परिस्थिती पाहता या सगळ्यांच्या भावनांची फसवणूक झालीय असेच चित्र दिसतेय. त्यातल्या अनेकांचा तो अहंकाराचा, प्रतिष्ठेचा विषय असल्याने सहजासहजी ते हे मान्य करणार नाहीत. मात्र काळाच्या ओघात त्यांना त्यांच्या निर्णयाचा पश्चाताप होईल. पंतप्रधानांनी नुकतेच जे आवाहन केले त्याला सामान्य माणसांकडून काही प्रतिसाद मिळाला का? अनेक नेत्यांच्या गाड्यांचे ताफे सुसाट पळताना दिसतात. आशिष शेलारांना दुचाकीवर घेऊन देवेंद्र फडणवीस विधी मंडळात आले. त्यावेळी शेलार उपहासाने काय म्हणाले...? 'काही दिवसांनी सगळ्या गाड्या बाजूला ठेवून आमच्या सिक्युरिटीला पण आम्हाला डोक्यावर उचलून आणावे लागेल...' काही मोदी भक्तांनी पंतप्रधानांच्या आवाहनाला प्रतिसाद म्हणून सार्वजनिक वाहतूक व्यवस्थेचा पर्याय निवडला. तास न तास वाट पाहूनही गाड्या येत नसल्याने आणि आलेल्या गाड्या नरकापेक्षा बत्तर असल्याने त्यांनीच त्या व्यवस्थेवर चित्रफिती करून शासनाची लक्तरे काढली.

एकंदरीत काय नरेंद्र मोदी म्हणजे पंडित जवाहरलाल नेहरू नाहीत, इंदिरा गांधी नाहीत, लालबहादूर शास्त्री नाहीत की पंडित अटलबिहारी वाजपेयी देखील नाहीत. 'ज्या दिवशी नको वाटेल त्या दिवशी झोला उठा के हिमालय चला जाऊंगा' असेच ते सांगतात. त्यांच्या पंतप्रधानपदाच्या कारकिर्दीतच धार्मिक अस्मिता टोकदार झाल्यात. जातीय संघर्ष विकोपाला गेलेत. ज्या प्रवृत्तींच्या विरूद्ध भाजपाच्या लोकांनी आयुष्यभर संघर्ष केला ते सर्व आज भाजपमध्ये येऊन पवित्र झालेत. निष्ठावान कार्यकर्त्यांना पक्षात कसलीच किंमत राहिली नाही. 'धीरूभाई का सपना, सबका माल अपना' या प्रमाणे जे जे लुबाडता येईल ते ते लुबाडण्याचे, ओरबडण्याचे सत्र सुरू आहे. महाराष्ट्र साहित्य परिषदेसारखी छोटी संस्था असेल किंवा पश्चिम बंगालसारखे राज्य असेल, मतदारयाद्यात घोळ केले, निवडणूक निर्णय अधिकाऱ्यांना हाताशी धरले की जे हवे ते मिळवता येते, हे त्यांनी दिले आहे. दाखवून

दुर्गम भागात रस्ते, उड्डाणपूल, महामार्ग अशी प्रगती दिसतेय खरी ! त्यामुळे दळववळणाच्या दृष्टिने देश जोडला गेलाय पण याच रस्त्यावरून कोविडच्या काळात शेकडो किलोमिटर चालत जाणारे देशबांधव आपण बघितले. शिक्षण व्यवस्था कोलमडलीय. आरोग्य व्यवस्था तिरडीवर ताणलीय. गुन्हेगारीने कळस गाठलाय. कधीचेही वृत्तपत्र उघडा तुम्हाला या संदर्भातल्याच बातम्या दिसतील.

पथ का अंतिम लक्ष नहीं है, सिंहासन चढते जाना सब समाज को लिए साथ में, आगे है बढते जाना असं एक अत्यंत प्रेरणादायी संघ गीत आहे. या लोकांना सध्या संघ विचारधारेचेही वावडे दिसतेय. एकीकडे संघाचा सातत्याने 'मातृसंस्था' म्हणून उल्लेख होत असताना दुसरीकडे भाजपवाल्यांनाच संघ संपवायचा आहे की काय, असा प्रश्न पडल्यावाचून राहत नाही. सेवा, त्याग, समर्पण अशा मूल्यांशी फारकत घेतल्याप्रमाणे भाजपच्या नेत्यांचे वागणे आहे. ज्या मूल्यांचे संवर्धन अपेक्षित होते ते पायदळी तुडवण्यात येत आहेत. स्वच्छ चारित्र्य, निष्कलंक व्यक्तिमत्त्व, प्रामाणिक, राष्ट्रप्रेमी नेतृत्व हे सगळे इतिहासजमा होत आहे. काहीही करून सत्ता मिळवायची आणि जेवढी लूट करता येईल तेवढी करायची इतकेच धोरण या 'पार्टी विथ डिफरन्स' कडून दिसतेय.

असे म्हणतात की कोणतीही व्यक्ती, संस्था, पक्ष सर्वोच्च स्थानी गेला की त्याची पुन्हा घसरण सुरू होते. एखादा डोंगर सर करण्याचे आव्हान आपल्यापुढे असते. मोठ्या कष्टाने तो डोंगर चढला की काही भाग सपाट लागतो पण पुन्हा उतरंड अटळ असते. या सपाट भागावर असताना तुम्हाला आनंद मिळतो पण त्यावेळी मस्ती केली तर भुईसपाट व्हायला वेळ लागत नाही. देशातील बहुतेक राज्याची सत्ता हस्तगत केल्यानंतर, अनेक जुन्या नेत्यांना संपवल्यांनतर आपण अमृताचा प्याला घेऊन जन्माला आलोय, असा कुणाचा समज झाला असेल तर तो खरा नाही. जो सामान्य माणूस एखाद्याला डोक्यावर उचलून घेतो तोच अती झाल्यावर त्याला पायदळी तुडवतो हा या मातीचा गुण आहे. खूप कमी काळात स्वतःची दुसरी काँग्रेस करून घेणाऱ्यांना याचा विसर पडू नये इतकेच!

When the Plateau Ends: The Looming Decline of the BJP | Lalbhadur Shastri vs Narendra Modi

The year was 1965. The Indo-Pakistani War had triggered a massive food shortage across India. At the time, the country was led by a Prime Minister of immaculate character and integrity—Lal Bahadur Shastri. Because of his deeply patriotic and self-sacrificing nature, the people loved him immensely. He took several monumental decisions in the national interest. To tackle the food crisis, he made a poignant appeal to the citizens: "Give up one meal, one day a week." He chose Monday for himself, giving up his Monday evening meal. The nation responded to his call with overwhelming enthusiasm; countless citizens stopped eating on Monday nights. The impact was so profound that Monday came to be affectionately known as "Shastriji’s Day."

The reason for recalling this piece of history today is a recent appeal made by the current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. A staggering 73 days after the fallout of global conflicts, he finally urged the public: “Do not travel abroad, do not buy gold, cut down on cooking oil consumption, work from home, and use electric vehicles to save fuel...” Why it took him so many days to make this appeal is a question any ordinary citizen can easily answer.

Elections in certain states were staring him in the face. Despite mocking the opposition in the past with taunts like "Didi... Oh Didi... Khela Hobe", success had eluded him. This time, the strategy for West Bengal had to be revamped, and Assam had to be secured. It was only after these political obligations were sorted out that a sudden wave of patriotism seemingly washed over him. Soon after, fuel prices skyrocketed, and LPG cylinder rates were hiked. Under the guise of patriotism, the government did not hesitate to do whatever it took to break the back of the common man.

What happened after this appeal? The common public realized the sheer gravity of the economic emergency looming over the country. The jeweler community turned entirely against the Prime Minister and his party. The very government that had previously reduced gold import duties was now, under a cloak of nationalism, asking people not to buy gold. While no one is going to buy gold by the kilogram just to protest the government, this flip-flop has certainly fueled widespread resentment.

The Reality Behind the Rhetoric

The masses are still reeling from the aftershocks of GST and demonetization. During the COVID-19 pandemic, getting vaccinated was made virtually mandatory; without a vaccine certificate, entry into bus stations, railway stations, and airports was barred. Yet today, as reports of vaccine side-effects emerge, the government conveniently backtracks, claiming it was merely a health advisory for well-being and never legally binding! To cover up this incompetence and shamelessly justify moves like GST or demonetization, certain propaganda movies are being released. A narrative is being aggressively peddled that everything done by the regime was solely in the national interest, and anyone who opposes it is labeled an anti-national.

Frustrated by the chaos of the Congress era, the public desperately wanted a change, leading to a massive political shift. Today, however, the common man finds himself jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. For many who suffered during the Congress regime, this transition initially felt like India’s second struggle for independence. Many viewed Modi as a divine incarnation, a Vishwaguru (world leader), or even a manifestation of Lord Vishnu. A massive class of citizens emerged who took immense pride in calling themselves 'Modi Bhaktas' (devotees).

Looking at the current state of the nation, it is evident that the emotions of these very people have been betrayed. Since it has now become a matter of personal ego and prestige for many of them, they will not admit it easily. However, with the passage of time, they are bound to regret their choices.

Did the Prime Minister's recent appeal receive any genuine response from the common public? Meanwhile, convoys of politicians continue to speed through our streets. When BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis arrived at the legislature riding a scooter with Ashish Shelar, Shelar remarked sarcastically: “In a few days, we might have to ditch all cars and have our security guards carry us on their heads...” On the other hand, some Modi supporters actually tried responding to the PM's appeal by opting for public transport. After waiting for hours for buses that never arrived, or boarding trains that felt worse than hell, they ended up making videos exposing the pathetic state of governance, washing the administration's dirty linen in public.

A Drastic Shift in Values

To put things into perspective, Narendra Modi is neither Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, nor Indira Gandhi, nor Lal Bahadur Shastri, nor even Pandit Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His standard response remains: "The day I feel like it, I will just pick up my bag and leave for the Himalayas." Yet, it is during his tenure that religious identities have become dangerously sharp and caste conflicts have peaked. The very political elements that BJP workers fought against their entire lives have now joined the BJP and washed away their sins. Loyal, grassroots party workers have been left with no value.

Following the cynical mantra of "Dhirubhai ka Sapna, Sabka Maal Apna" (Dhirubhai's dream, everyone's wealth is ours), a relentless spree of plundering resources is underway. Whether it is a small cultural institution like the Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad or a major state like West Bengal, they have shown that by manipulating voter lists and keeping election officials in their pockets, they can capture whatever they desire.

Admittedly, progress is visible in remote areas through new roads, flyovers, and highways. The country has certainly become better connected logistically. But we cannot forget that these are the very same roads where, during the COVID-19 lockdown, hundreds of thousands of our own citizens were forced to walk barefoot for hundreds of kilometers. The education system has collapsed, the healthcare system is on its deathbed, and crime has reached its zenith. Open any newspaper today, and it is filled with nothing but these grim realities.

There is a deeply inspiring Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) song that goes:

Path ka antim lakshya nahi hai, singhasan chadhte jana Sab samaj ko liye saath mein, aage hai badhte jana... (The ultimate goal of our journey is not merely to ascend the throne, but to move forward taking the entire society along...)

Today, the current leadership seems to find even this core RSS ideology unpalatable. While the BJP consistently refers to the RSS as its 'mother organization' on one hand, their actions make one wonder if the BJP secretly wants to eliminate the RSS's influence altogether. The behavior of BJP leaders indicates a complete divorce from values like service, sacrifice, and dedication. The very morals that were expected to be nurtured are being trampled upon. Clean character, unblemished personality, honesty, and selfless patriotic leadership are fast becoming history. The sole policy of this self-proclaimed 'Party with a Difference' now seems to be: grab power by any means necessary and plunder as much as possible.

The Inevitable Decline

It is a historical truth that when any individual, institution, or political party reaches the absolute peak of its power, its decline begins. Scaling a mountain is a steep challenge. After a grueling climb, you hit a plateau, but an eventual descent is inevitable. While resting on that plateau, it is easy to rejoice, but if arrogance takes over, it doesn't take long to be brought down to the dust.

If anyone harbors the illusion that they have unlocked the elixir of immortality after capturing power in most states and finishing off veteran leaders, they are gravely mistaken. The very same common man who lifts a leader onto their shoulders will trample them underfoot if things go overboard—that is the inherent nature of this soil.

Those who have managed to turn themselves into a replica of the old, corrupt Congress in such a short span of time would do well not to forget this lesson.
